Loading is finished, but the truck is still inside: the hidden time before departure

Between the end of loading or unloading and the truck actually leaving, there are tasks that can hide waiting time and block capacity. Separating the milestones of the operational close-out reveals the cause and lets you act on it precisely.

When loading or unloading is finished, it is easy to consider the operation closed. Yet truck dwell time keeps running until the vehicle leaves the site. Between those two moments there may still be checks, paperwork, seals, validations or instructions that keep the yard occupied even when the dock already looks available.

Finishing the operation is not the same as closing the visit

The physical end of loading or unloading is just one milestone. Afterwards it may still be necessary to remove equipment, close doors, check quantities, log an incident, get a signature or authorise departure. If all of these actions are grouped under a single status, the team loses the ability to see where the time is being spent.

The result is a misleading picture. A dock may show as occupied when it is already ready for another vehicle. Or it may show as free while the truck is still standing in front of the door. Either way, the next operation is planned on an incomplete view.

Four milestones to see the operational close-out

Useful traceability should distinguish at least four moments: end of loading or unloading, physical release of the dock, paperwork completed, and departure from the site. This is not about adding bureaucracy, but about recording events that already happen and giving them a shared meaning.

This separation makes it possible to answer specific questions. Does the delay happen when the vehicle is moved off? Are administrative validations piling up? Are there operations that finish on time but block the door? Does departure depend on a confirmation that arrives late? With Slot’s Eyes, the statuses of the operation can be visible within a single flow, making it easier for the yard, the dock and administration to read the situation the same way.

Measuring each stage to fix the cause

A total time tells you there is a delay, but not where it comes from. Measuring the intervals between milestones helps separate the dock’s actual occupation from the time spent on paperwork or on departure. Improvement then stops being based on impressions.

If the longest interval appears before the door is released, it may be necessary to review tasks, resources or close-out instructions. If it appears afterwards, it is worth looking at validations, paperwork, communication with the driver or access control. Slot’s Eyes provides the traceability needed to compare equivalent operations without mixing different stages.

A clear status also coordinates the carrier

The driver needs to know whether to stay at the dock, move to a safe area or head for the exit. An ambiguous instruction leads to phone calls, unnecessary movements and vehicles standing where the next operation should already be starting.

Sharing the correct status reduces that uncertainty. It also stops administration, the gatehouse and the warehouse from working with different versions of the same visit. Coordination improves when every team can see what has finished, what is still pending and who needs to act.

Closing well frees up real capacity

Optimising the yard is not only about speeding up loading or unloading. It also means closing every visit in an orderly way and turning its final stretch into operational information. By separating the milestones, Slot’s Eyes helps uncover hidden time and release docks on a more reliable basis.

The aim is not to add more statuses for the sake of it. It is to know when an operation has really finished and what is stopping the truck from continuing on its way. That difference can give capacity back to the yard without building a single extra dock.
